ALLEGORIES / Love

photography by Josef Guinzbourg

“Flemish portraits in Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum gave me a shock when I was eight. My parent's house was decorated with reproductions of Botticelli, Léger and Chagall’s paintings and my aunt’s portrait by Picasso. My grandfather, a sunday painter, Iived upstairs among a fragrant mess of smashed paint tubes.”

Since she was twelve, Sophie Guinzbourg has been practicing oil painting and visiting small or big museums everywhere. Vermeer, Giotto and Matisse are some of her references.

While in her third year at the Faculty of Humanities in the french town of Nancy, Sophie opened her own fashion boutique. She soon interrupted her studies to create clothes, jewels and bags. These creations were shown and distributed by shops and art galleries and promoted by well-known magazines like "Marie-Claire", "Elle" and "Le Figaro".

In 1989 Sophie is chosen to design the poster for the prestigious "Nancy Jazz Pulsations" Festival. Her work is noticed and appreciated by the public and the press. From that moment on she is able to live from her art...

D.C. Fuchs (Museum Stibbert Florence Italy) thinks she belongs to the tradition of genre scenes. Through deliberate distorted perspective, her figurative paintings present the relationships between human beings, often men and women in love. Sophie Guinzbourg's work tells us silent, modest and sincere stories of life.

Possible Serenity

In Sophie Guinzbourg's paintings, human relationships, a look, a gesture, movement and expressions combine to create a world of her own.  A table, an armchair or a glass suffice to give a place in time to these ordinary, beautiful heroes, who exemplify not Olympian perfection, but human failings and frailties.

As in genre painting, this is a calmly affectionate world, where people spend time together, love and value each other, though they sometimes experience solitude. These people and their stories bear witness to possible serenity.

Colour and line are the means to this end. Light is evenly diffused over the surface of the paintings, where sometimes a patch of brighter or more intense colour highlights a hand, a face or an object, to create a dramatic effect that catches the eye and feeds the imagination. Outlines are fluid but solidly drawn and the compositions play with perspective without ever distorting it.

This is the work of a calm and thoughtful artist, who offers the unpretentious example of a human and tenderly joyful universe, for the pleasure of all who care to encounter the dialogue of colour and line.
